Neuromuscular massage is a progressive massage that works the muscles from the superficial to the deep layers of the tissue. It stimulates the nervous-integumentary system in order to obtain an effective loosening of muscle fibres for clients with complex muscle problems, or more specific needs.
The primary aim and benefit of this massage is to work on the muscles. It is therefore recommended when there is a problem or pain in the muscular system. Although neuromuscular massage is used more for muscle relaxation, it is appropriate for the management of stress due to its effect on the nervous system.
This technique is often paired with other massage therapy techniques during a treatment. The therapist will use neuromuscular massage to work a specific area of the body differently. It allows them to easily relax the muscles.
The contraindictions of neuromuscular massage are the same as those for most techniques: fever, infection, wounds or skin problems and history of heart problems.
